Unlike the previous USB-to-TTL adapter, this version did expose the rest of the chip’s pins along the top and bottom of the board and were labeled on the back of the PCB. (Thanks to a user on Open Energy Monitor website for discovering these issues). Second the RST pin was not the boot-loader reset pin but actually a USB reset pin this could have just been a miss-understanding on my part. First the TXD and RXD pins were labeled incorrectly, so the RXD pin was really the TXD and the TXD pin was the RXD. There were several problems with the one I got off of E-Bay.

The software driver for your operating system can be found on the Silicon Labs website. The second USB-to-TTL serial adapter I found was based on the CP2102 chip and it appeared to have the necessary reset pin exposed. This serial adapter will be regulated to sending information to the Atmega328 via USB port and not to uploading sketches. The PL-2303HX chip does have DTR/RTS support therefore you could solder a wire to the correct pin on the chip but that was beyond my soldering skills. The main problem using the above USB-to-TTL serial adapter is that it does not have the DTR/RTS (Data Terminal Ready/Request to Send) wire necessary to initiate the boot-loader reboot sequence meaning that you have to time pressing the reset on the ATMega328 chip when uploading a program (this is really frustrating). The following is what I learned from the Prolific website on the PL-2303HX chip:

Lastly you have to connect the RXD of the adapter to the TXD of your chip and the TXD of the adapter to the RXD of your chip. Secondly USB-to-TTL serial adapters do not have to be used to upload a sketch to the Atmega328 chip it can be used to send information from the Atmega328 chip to your computer via USB. If you have an Arduino you can use it to burn the boot-loader to the Atmega328, see Arduino ISP. It should be noted that USB-to-TTL serial adapters can not be used to burn a boot-loader to the Atmega328 chips that requires a different programmer. Regrettably I probably should have done more research before buying my first one…then second one but in the end I did get both working. In my research I came across several USB-to-TTL serial adapters on E-Bay that I believed would fit that purpose. I purchased a couple of the Atmel Atmega328 chips and wanted to be able to upload a sketch (program) to them (see breadboard Arduino).
